Hey Peeps.

To be honest, I absolutely dislike the sound of inexpensive Yamaha digital consoles including the 02R (well... not including the DM1000). The overall sound of the DA7 is something special which has to be one of the reasons why many of us still defend it on this forum today.

Have you ever tried Coca Cola from a can and compared it to the taste of Coca Cola from a glass bottle? Hopefully you all understand what I'm getting at. The bottled Coke tastes better.

Many projects done in my studio get mastered at a $200.00/hr mastering house up here in Toronto... a place called Lacquer Channel if you really want to know. Anyhow, I have been asked numerous times what analog board I am using in my studio. What more of a compliment can the DA7 receive? I was just there again last week for another mastering session and sure enough, I had to explain to them the mix I had was done with 2 Ramsa DA7 digital consoles.

Hazzard - Unless you plan on upgrading to a Yamaha DM1000, I would suggest saving your money and stick with the Ramsa.

Now... need I say more??

I just re-read Hazzard's first post.

It would really surprise me if the 01V96 were an *upgrade.* That doesn't come from having heard or fondled one, just from the name. The 01 is a lower-end series than the DA7, which was competitive with the 02R.

The 01V was an update to the ProMix 01, and the 01V96 is an update to the 01V. How much is it? $1700? The DA7 was $5000. Granted that was five years ago - which is 100 years in computer years - but I still wouldn't expect it to be an upgrade.

You never know, though. Maybe my intuition is wrong.

Hey Nick,

Indeed. I just had a flashback to the days when the ProMix was making waves in the industry, then right after that the hype was over the O2R. The DA7 was most definately O2R's rival, therefore making my point even a little stronger perhaps??? Cheers.

I am getting a good price on the Yamaha board tomorow.. I am NOT going to buy anything without testing /listening to it first!

So cross your fingers all you Da7 owners, including myself because I really like my Da7. \:\)

But in a few months to a year from now it is hard to get good money for a used Da7.. So i thought it would be better to get "newer" equipment soon..

Never mind months, try now. I've been trying to sell my DA7/meter bridge/3xADAT card for months. No sale and going cheap, so I goina keep it for while then get something later. Here in Australia the RAMSA is not very well known, everyone goes for Yamaha. Maybe if Panasonic kept going things may have been different, but who wants a product that can't be upgraded or supported.
The 01V96 in my opinion is not better than the DA7 but then it's not worse. It has features that the DA7 doesn't have.
Have a look at the latest Sound on Sound August edition there is a write-up on the 01V96.

Has anyone noticed that the latest rage is to return computer recording to a "hands on" control surface? I'm sticking with the "7" for now.

You mean control surfaces? Considering that the Mackie HUI came out around 1997 and that it wasn't the first one, they can hardly be called the latest rage! It's not that computer-based recording is "returning" to hands-on control, it's that it has grown and more and people are buying them.

In any case, it isn't an either/or situation. I've been mixing inside Pro Tools since before I had the DA7, and I have one of the first ones.
