Gang... I'm looking for a summing mixer for under $2k. I'd like to have 16 ins and 2 pairs out, and perhaps with nice EQ built in.

BTW, I tried the Dangerous 2-BUS LT and I do like how it sounds as compared to 100% in-box mastered audio.

Any tips?

It seems like everyone is talking about these lately.

A friend of mine loaned me the SSL summing mixer (that goes in the X Rack) and it didn't really do much.

I have another friend who is running through an old (I think they're Trident) set of modules to do this.

Could you just use a line mixer? Otari made a pretty nice one for a while.

you don't need 16 ins to get the advantages of a summing mixer. I would get 10 or 12 and better analog track than 16. You run stereo stems of stuff like all the drums on a L and R, bass on 1, instruments on another L-R.

If Long is snooping around here he might chime in ;-) He knows Nautilus stuff, but I think he is using the Neve one.

2k! I have heard this one and its punchy, warm, great for rock, pop, jazz.

Vintage King also did a Summing Mixer shootout a couple of years ago, if you google it. They had one where they did a couple of songs and you can hear what the different mixers sound like. Try and look it up...

I'm curious: has anyone compared a summing mixer to running a stereo mix through something with character?

I would be curious to that as well.

I tried the SSL summing X-Rack and it sounded a little different but not better/worse. I can't imagine dropping the $2000 or whatever it costs on that.

My buddy (HERE) uses Dangerous Music 2-Bus with great results. He is on the hip-hop side of things.. I'm covering classical and jazz projects, so I don't want any coloring... just a bit of added warmth would be nice.
